Hello from Swedesboro, New Jersey

Post by Swedesboro Castle »

Hello fellow enthusiasts. I'm happy to find this site again.

My home was built between 1885 and 1900 and is constructed of Brandywine granite and brownstone. One expert called it Romanesque Revival and another claims it's Queen Anne Victorian. I welcome all your thoughts. It does have stone columns on the portico and lovely arches in the parlor - along with a pretty turret with original curved, leaded stained glass. My novice research leads me to believe that the creative architect married two styles. It's delightful.

Built by James Justice Davidson, it remained in his family through early 1980. I am the 4th owner since then. Time stands still, inside and out with all original: woodwork, hardwood floors, double-hung windows, stained glass windows, dumbwaiter and old gas pipes poking out of the walls and ceilings.

It's been properly maintained with zero renovations and has all original hardware, inlaid tiles on the portico and foyer, over-sized radiators and porcelain sinks. It's my dream come true.

I plan to learn from this site and others like it, to continue the preservation for as long as it is in my care. I was told, by a local old timer, that in the 1940's this home was always referred to as "The Castle." So that's how I continue to refer to it.

The two most frequently asked questions from those who stop to chat as they stroll through the main street village:

From children: "Is that a castle?" I answer: "Yes it is."

From adults: "Are there any ghosts in there?" I answer: "Yes there are and you are speaking to a future ghost, because I never plan to leave this place."

What a stunning home. Absolutely gorgeous! How lucky that you found a "survivor"- good on ya for wanting to keep it that way! Now, if you'd only post a pic or two of your kitchen... I'd love to see what the original kitchen looks like!

Happy 100th birthday, house!!
