Hi and welcome, from a former (SE) Pennsylvanian.
Many of the houses in my current hood have roofed over their chimneys, including my neighbor. I hear it lowers insurance costs to seal off the fireplace. Mine is still functional, but the fireplace was removed and a wood burning stove was there from the early 40's until 2003.
