Re: Plaster repair on ceiling and near chimney

did you feel insulted because I suggested other methods? No, I felt insulted because you flatly stated what I recommended the user was a scam and was useless, without even understanding how it works - at all. That you don't understand what it does is demonstrated by your recommendation of mixing gl...

Re: Plaster repair on ceiling and near chimney

No one needs to spend all that money on elmer's or ridiculous joint compound. Just dissolve some old Styrofoam lunch boxes and used roofing shingles in bear urine and gasoline. Best glue there is. Mix it into some used baby powder from a landfill, slap some creosote on it to kill the odor and you'r...

Re: Plaster repair on ceiling and near chimney

Seriously just try mixing some yellow carpenters glue in your drywall taping compound. squish it in your cracks and bed tape over them. drill holes like the walleys mud of you want.. ...

You might be an old home nut if you don't mind going out covered in paint smudges and old house pixie dust.

Re: Abandoned places

Not everyone is "on the same page" when it comes to old houses. I see this all the time. In rural areas, I'll see a big Italianate farmhouse with a house-trailer sitting behind it. The family lives in the trailer, and lets the house rot. In urban areas, like where I live, beautiful--or on...

Re: Plaster repair on ceiling and near chimney

So I bought Plaster Weld and I am a bit unsure on the preparation. Is this something that is mixed into the plaster? Or something that is painted on and then plastered over? ETA: It seems that it can be done as either, but I can apply prior to plastering as almost a "sealer", which is wha...

Re: Abandoned places

Vala, I think most times it comes down to money. Old money that built these grand homes has long since run out after the home gets willed down a couple of times. At some point they get sold out of the family for lack of funds or interest. Land lords pick them up cheap, slum lords buy them even chea...

Re: Our First House!

Lovely house, and NOT victorian, don't care what anyone says (they're wrong ) Looks like you have your work cut out for you, though! It is definitely a turn-of-the-century vernacular house. It has Victorian and Craftsman elements, for sure. Oh, and as for the work? YES. It is amazing how you buy a ...

Re: What I did at my house today...

I think insulation is a great invention. It baffles me how they still hadn't thought of it into the 30's and 40's. but they would have done differently if they had modern materials and techniques, and the 2 or 300 dollar heat bills to go with. Phil I assume because heating fuel was in such abundanc...
