Re: Hi!

We went to the bank today to sign our loan papers. While we were there, we spoke with the bank president. He's a third generation bank president at our local bank, and happens to be the grandson of the first bank president--the man who built our house! We had a lovely chat and he told us lots of fon...

Re: Hi!

Thanks, Gothichome! I'm sure you're right about living in the house before making any improvements, but as a teacher with a 1-year-old on the loose, it will be much better for us to spend the summer working on the home before we move in. I'm sure the house will still have plenty to tell us once we'r...

Re: Hi!

Well, our full home inspection was just done and the house is in good shape! Phew! That's a load off my mind. Looks like most of the issues are cosmetic. Those are the fun kind! Eventually we will need to merge the electric onto a single panel (the house was broken into 3 units and the electric is s...

Re: 1876 Second Empire brick house

Vala! We both live in Southern IL, and as you know, it's a small world down here. Will you PM me the location of this gorgeous home? I have to know whether or not I've seen it before!

Re: Brass dust corners for stairs

My aunt and uncle have dust corners in their 1908 Dutch colonial, I'm not sure if they are original or if they added them later, though. I always thought they looked neat!

Re: A unique archway

I mean, yeah, that's true. My point was that this particular 1920s home *does* otherwise conform to the craftsman style. Although I suppose the original owners maybe had a whim and made this archway the way it is. I found a connection to a previous owner so I'm going to do a little more digging and ...

Re: Hi!

Thanks for the warm welcome! The sellers officially accepted our offer today, so we are on our way owning this beauty!

I would love to see if it's a kit home. Once I have more extra time on my hands, I'll do some research. :)

Re: A unique archway

That would be really cool! The age of the home fits right in with the Orientalist idea, but I do find it odd that none of the other original details show that style. The rest is all very typical craftsman style...thick baseboards and crown moldings, a square little brick fireplace, square windows an...

A unique archway

The circa 1920 bungalow that we put an offer on today has a very interesting archway from the front room to the original dining room. I've never seen one this shape before, and to me it doesn't really match the other details in the home. Do you think it's original? What style would you call it? http...

1916 Bungalow

Hello! My name is Meg. My husband and I just moved back to my hometown in the Midwest. I've always loved old houses and knew that one day I would have one of my own. We just put an offer in on an adorable front gable bungalow and I am so excited to start getting my hands dirty! I know I'll learn a l...
