Re: Opinion Question: Remove the storm door?
Our house still has its original front door, which I absolutely love. It has a big rectangular pane of glass in it, but I'm not sure if it's the original glass or if it's been replaced. It has beveled edges--does that say anything about its age? Currently it's covered up by a hideous aluminum storm ...

Mick_VT wrote:your drawers should be able to tell you whether there was a pull or a knob originally installed.
Because there will be two holes vs. one? Or is there another way to tell?

Re: Period appropriate drawer pulls?
I came across a couple images of kitchens from that time period:

Seems like knobs, cup pulls, or latches are all correct. In these images, the hardware all appears to be dark metal.

We have one of those in our bathroom from its 1950's reno. They still sell similar ones at Lowe's: http://www.lowes.com/pd/Ashton-6-25-in- ... t/50123971

Re: 1836 Cape in MA
Welcome, Christine! Another parent of a 1 year old here. It does complicate working on the house, doesn't it? I love your house! I feel like you strike a good balance between honoring the age of your home and making it a comfortable space for a modern family. I love your wide fireplaces, moldings, a...

Re: Period appropriate drawer pulls?
Thank you for the links! It makes sense that the current knobs are from a later date--the kitchen went through some cosmetic "upgrades" through the years. I like the look of the cup pulls, but I don't think that was the original type of pull. The drawers only have one hole for the hardware...

Period appropriate drawer pulls?
Our 1916 bungalow kitchen has a marvelous built-in hutch. I was inspecting the drawer pulls today, as we need to get some to put on our cabinets and I want them to match, or at least coordinate. At first, I thought the pulls looked original to the piece. They are ceramic with a metal border/base. Bu...

Re: Plastering Question
Thanks to everyone for the advice! I have a follow-up question. Also in the kitchen, we are wanting to put a subway tile backsplash on the wall with cabinets. The walls are currently in the same condition--loose plaster and old adhesive chipped off, so the wall is down to the browncoat. What do I ne...

Re: Hood Vent (kitchen)
I hope not too, Gibson! I don't know who would be doing the cutting...we plan to live in the house for the long run, and we hope to eventually refurbish the floor in the future. You're twisting my arm to look at venting. There is a mystery soffit right above the stove location that leads toward the ...
