Re: 1916 Bungalow
So. The counter of our original built in kitchen hutch appeared to have been replaced with a Formica countertop secured with metal strips. We bought IKEA oak butcher block to replace it, which would match the rest of our counters. Surprise! Today we removed the metal strips and discovered the Formic...

Thank you! I agonized for a long time over that choice. I think it is the best match we could get, for what it is.we ran the same floor into the kitchen, too.

Re: 1916 Bungalow
Lovesickest, it's a floating laminate floor on top of the vinyl, which is on top of the original wood flooring.

Re: 1916 Bungalow
Gothichome, I think that's exactly what happened. There were five doors in the 12x15 kitchen, with the built in hutch on one wall and the stove on another. Really, the only place left was under the sink. It will make washing dishes cozy this winter! There is a radiator box that covers it, but we too...

Re: 1916 Bungalow
Thanks, Don! We're trying to get as much done as possible by our Aug 1 move in date. I'm off for the summer and my hubby works part time, so any time we can get a babysitter lined up, we're over at the house working. Grandma is getting a lot of baby qt this summer. ![Thumbup ](./images/smilies/icon_thumbup.gif)

Re: 1916 Bungalow
I did some more work in the kitchen today. So far I have: knocked down loose plaster, removed steel tiles and dried mastic from the lower half of the walls, gutted the 1950's cabinets, walled off a doorway that lead to the master bedroom (there is another door from the bedroom in the hallway), repla...

Re: 1916 Bungalow
Thanks, Don. Yes, a PO replaced some of the windows, including these. The original floor is 2" red oak, but it is covered in vinyl floor that has a friable asbestos backing (directly adhered to the oak). Until we can afford to address it, we are installing a floating laminate floor that is a pr...

Re: 1916 Bungalow
We have been in constant work mode at the house for the last few weeks. After removing wallpaper and tile, gutting the cheap 1950's cabinets, replastering, running new electrical, and god knows what else, we are finally to the point of putting things back together. I have to say that fresh paint wor...

Re: Seeking Inspiration for painted wood & cement steps
they did the entire basement floor and did these raised areas for storing things because I was told the basement flooded frequently until they went on city sewer. Are the "raised areas" around the perimeter of the basement? If so, that's how many old basements are, including my own. I was...
