Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)
A side note on interior comfort: When I first moved into the house in 2009, it was a mostly chilly affair in winter. As heat rises, the second floor was always infinitely more comfortable than the first. This became glaringly obvious by 2015, when the upstairs was finished (but for one room) with an...

Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)
Thank you all for your comments and encouragement. It means a lot. Mal, it might only take one coat to fill the gaps. I hope that's all it takes. I have to be careful to not overfill too much and leave a ton to sand off! Willa, yes I have a mantle to go over the insert. You can see it in the photo o...

Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)
The sun has set for the last time in 2016, and I wanted to give a (large and rambling) update on where things are at currently. I just finished the actual construction of my corner cabinet/shelving units. Doing the shelves was one of the more difficult things I have had to do...more difficult than j...

Re: A New Old House
Just the fact that there is a clawfoot tub doesn't mean it is original to the house. For instance, my house was built in 1874 and at that time only the very finest of houses had indoor plumbing, and usually in more urban settings. Not sure about Canada but in rural USA plumbing didn't really come un...

Re: A New Old House
I really love the house. It's very cute (I have a thing for small houses). "The full bath upstairs has the original clawfoot tub, but a cheap little new sink. The room is oddly large. " Any chance it was at one point another bedroom? Judging by the age i'd say a high chance you pre-date ba...

Re: Jacob Beaty House (1874 Folk Victorian)
Well, sometimes you finish things on schedule and sometimes you don't. I hit it out of the park in October with the preliminary work to the dining room, but as for finishing the living room by Christmas.....not gonna come close. Much of it has to do strictly with finances...I've always broken down t...

Re: Our First House!
Good to see an update....a guy goes away that long and one begins to worry. I hear you on the time issue. It always takes longer than you think...in my case, just need to make the capital before the capital improvements can continue. I was (wrongly) under the impression you were living in the house ...

Re: Saga of the 1830 House
I think the Jeld-Wen hollow core "six panel" doors lend a real authentic feel to the house.

Re: Old house lovers vs. the world
Sometimes it does feel as if we are becoming an anachronism, old house owners that is. I try to take it in stride and wear it proudly, because especially as a young-ish guy it is part of what makes me unique. My neighbors find me very interesting...if in a good way or bad way, well, you'd have to as...

"I forgot the name of the guy who had the HUGE rock in his basement that he turned into a wine cellar,"
That is Chris S. I think he's still around here, CS or CS in low Hudson?
