We've started work prepping the house for painting and made an interesting discovery. Some of the detail moulding I previously posted about is not wood or plaster, but cast stone Huh?! This was a real surprise. Interestingly, The egg & dart seems to match the cast stone detailing on the first ba...

Re: Hullo from the "there be dragons here" area of MA

Congratulations Lily !! You have sure had more than your share of rows to hoe with this purchase. So excited for you two who are about to embark on the wonderful life of old house stewardship. Despite all the projects, repairs and ongoing maintenance - there is no better place to call home than an o...

Re: Bucking The Trend On Long Island, NY

Welcome to the neighborhood Olson We look forward to hearing more about your home and ...of course, seeing pictures! IMO, It's not always the age of the house that really matters, it's the preservation mindset of the owner. Your pups are adorable. Praises to you for adopting senior pets, they so oft...

Re: Paint Shaver Pro

Hi Mick, I'm about to order my very own Paint Shaver Pro. Wondering which model you went with and why - the 8 or 13 amp? I don't see the 6 amp model being practical because of nails. I know to set them beforehand, but could possibly miss one or two. The 13 amp model is a variable speed - any thought...

Re: Built-ins, old or new

Lily - I must say that shoe shine built-in is quite unique. Seems a lost art nowadays, but I earned my share of pocket money shining my dad's shoes when I was really young. I think it would be fun just to say you have one of those. Chris - Wow, you hit the jackpot on built-ins! The clothes storage ...

Re: What I did at my house today...

Texas red, the window looks great. Silicon caulking? It should be banned from old homes on threat of bodily harm by the next owner, in this case you.... There was an small amount of clear silicone near the screws - the frame edge was buried in white acrylic caulk, loads of it. Still very pliable an...

Re: What I did at my house today...

Took advantage of the beautiful 70 degree weather and began the task of removing the aluminum storm from my big box head window. Boy, some po spared no caulk on this baby - took half the afternoon to get it free. This was hard work, there must be a better tool or method?!? So worth it, It lets in so...

PM's stumped me in the beginning... I believe a pm remains in your outbox until the receipent logs into the forum. Then it is sent to their inbox.
