Re: Advice on paint stripping

It looks great!!! I would be tempted to use automotive bondo to replicate the missing pieces / do repairs. Now you have the detail standing proud, if it were me I would paint this in a single color, it will let its beauty shine through. I think I might give it the first coats on the bench too Thank...

Re: Advice on paint stripping

** UPDATE Managed to remove a section of egg & dart without too much damage /breakage. IMG_2560.JPG Although I didn't measure, it is closer to 24" long x 6" x 6". Must weigh close to 15 lbs. Did I mention there is just over 100 feet of this? Inpatient me couldn't wait for stripper...

Re: Advice on paint stripping

I've used dumond chemical products with decent results...typically, it is a two coats system...apply, remove as much paint as possible then apply again... I have used peel away 6 and 7 and smart strip...when I asked the chemist at dumond about the differences between the products, he chose not to e...

Re: Advice on paint stripping

Thank for the suggestion Willa. I did just that and we drove the 40 miles yesterday to pick some up. We have several test areas going as I speak. Tomorrow morning will be the tell all. We were able to remove 1 section of the egg & dart moulding (pics tomorrow). It is a huge beast of cast stone (...

Re: Dealing with clapboard - separating corners

Thanks to all for this discussion about the various bondo products, epoxy and fillers. I learned so much (as always). Will be saving this info for immediate use as well as future projects. As far as the corners go, I don't think there is any rotted wood that will need replacing or extensive repairs....

Re: Dealing with clapboard - separating corners

..... in the photo the boards at the left are short and could be removed and refitted then use some calk on the left hand side. most of the shrinkage is across the board but on long boards you could also have some lengthwise shrinkage. does the other end fit better? Thanks Phil. On this particular ...

Re: Dealing with clapboard - separating corners

Nicholas, my take on this repair. I noticed the gap gets bigger as you go down. I would see if some thing more is going on here? I would see if the corner separation is actually starting a couple studs back from the corner. Are the boards starting to pull from there. If so I think I would start dra...

Re: Advice on paint stripping

Thanks for the feedback. Went to the hardware store to buy the Peel Away ( thanks Willa) . Saddly, they no longer carry it. I looked at the other 8 paint removers they stock, but decided not to buy yet another can of "something". Phil - I like your suggestion of trying a stiff brush. The p...

Re: Dealing with clapboard - separating corners

Mick Gibson and Nicholas - I appreciate the vote for bondo. It seems like a much more stable choice than simple latex caulk. DH seems relieved about this as a solution. Off the top of my head, I don't think I've ever seen *original* mitered wood clapboard corners. If I did, it didn't stick with me....

Dealing with clapboard - separating corners

Although this is limited in scope, we have areas of outside corners where the clapboards are separating. IMG_2522.JPG How best to deal with this? Some can be nailed back in place, others seem to have warped out of shape from exposure to rain etc. The painting contractor said he would fill with caulk...
