My wife took on this project. When we bought the house we sanded and refinished the floors and the landing but not the stairs. We were too wore out then. Last month she decided to sand and refinish the treads. The risers were still in good shape. She just rubbed stain on them as is to fix any defects.
Here's a before pic
And some after.
She also refinished 2 window seats and the window sills in the dining room. The house was a dusty mess for a few weeks but worth it in the end.

She scraped then used a "mouse" sander with 60 then 100 grit and some hand sanding. Minwax stain and parks water based satin poly. The same way we did the floors. You can apply 3 coats with an hour dry time between.
