Re: Cutting down antique trim

Don and Warren.... If I want to make the stain lighter, wouldn't I have to strip off the original finish and start over? I'd dying to buy the built in too, but that one looks it would have to be restained lighter. And, then there's the fight with my architect about a full sized built in. This would ...

Re: Cutting down antique trim

Lordy, Warren, I hadn't even thought about that. What a great idea!!!!!

Yeah, I'm leaning towards it. They have 30 headers, so I could have plenty of extra to use. I'm most concerned about matching the finishes. I'm all thumbs when it comes to that.

Re: Cutting down antique trim

Oh, and I was thinking of these colannades, but the color is a little off and it doesn't have egg and dart.

Re: Fireplaces and Hearths

I don't have a fireplace yet, hope the new addition (eventually will). Jeremy, can you PM me the name of the Rumford fireplace guy? I seem to remember reading about some guy in CT or RI that travels and is a Rumford expert (hopefully he travels north of the 'Pike). And Chris, if my renovations look ...

Re: Cutting down antique trim

Thanks all...I'm seeing them live tomorrow, will try to post some pics around midday. Also, how hard would it be to strip and restain the casings? When I spoke to the gal at the shop, she said the casings were slightly darker (IIRC). I am assuming it's easier to go lighter, and I'd prefer to match t...

Re: Cleaning old bricks--- Mold!

Bleach does not kill mold...it only kills the spores (or bleaches them). You need a fungicide (lordy don't ask me how I know). The best one I found thru all the smelly house research and talking to dozens of professionals is Shockwave. m You can usually get it at a better industrial supply house. Go...

Cutting down antique trim

Hi THD/WG/OHWers! SmellyJen has moved too. So, I have a chance to potentially pick up a LOT of window/door trim and casings for the Smelly House's first floor rebuild. 3 questions: 1. The new stuff is simple egg and dart on the headers. Which I actually like, but it wouldn't match the plainer header...

The Smellyhouse Redesign needs your help!

Well, WavyGlassers, the time has come. The Smellyhouse is finally getting its upgrade. I've received the first draft of my old house architect's plans.....and would like your feedback. There are 4 sets of plans: Existing Plan A: Existing footprint + 1 gabled dormer Plan B: Existing footprint + doubl...

Re: Well...it's begun. Need lighting ideas for whole house

Hi All! Thanks for all the comments. Look for another, very long thread, on the new plans. They are only the first draft, but will given you an idea of what I am talking about. Hi Gothic! Somehow, even though I'd been pouring over Old House Lights plans, I didn't realize they actually sold lights. I...

Re: 1860 farmhouse - Hello!

Welcome Oaktree! Pretty old house, glad it was 'saved' by a good owner. Like you, I delved right into demo. Be careful, though, sometimes you get a little giddy and tear out more than you should. Ideally, everyone's right that you should get in the house for a year. Mostly, because you'll learn wher...
