We've been here since 2012 after spending 13 years in Ohio. I grew up in western NY.

Re: Introduction: Howard House (c1910 Rockwood TN)

Are you saying this beautiful house is in Rockwood, TN? Just a hop, skip, and a jump over from me in Maryville. It looks like you have done some great work already. Keep posting, we love to hear about your work and see pictures. And both of you are a hop, skip, and a jump away from me in New Market...

Re: 100% wood windows Who makes them?

are you referring the meeting rail of the top sash has a profile rather than a flat surface? I typically see that on early 19th or 18th century sash that are approximately 1" thick and have no rope/pulley balance system...they were never mean to have locking hardware at the meeting rail... a g...

Re: Ghost Posts.... Your Spooky Tales Wanted

The kitchen and dining room of our house were built in 1820, a log cabin was added (or moved here) in 1840 and then the most recent addition dates to 1860/70. During the 1850 & 60s a family lived here who owned slaves. Mr. Thornburgh was a pro slavery Unionist who was the district attorney. He a...

Re: 100% wood windows Who makes them?

Vala, yeah I know it's unusual. Either it's a rural Tennessee thing, or just a thing with whoever originally made these windows. I've stopped questioning the mindset that went into building this house. :)

Re: 100% wood windows Who makes them?

Our upper and lower sashes are absolutely identical/interchangeable. Profiles on all 4 sides of both. Hoffmeyer questioned that as did our other sash maker, but yes indeed, every window here is like that. Go figure. FWIW there never were any locks or hardware on our windows at all.

The guy kind of acted like that would be an imposition. He said they mill windows with their standard profile, I have no idea how different that is from what we have here. Dave Bowers matched our profile, it was one that he didn't already have the knives for.

Re: 100% wood windows Who makes them?

That price is about double what Dave Bowers charged me 2 years ago and he matched the profile. His prices have gone up quite a bit since then though. I'm not quibbling with the $900 at all, just that I didn't think wider, unmatched muntins would look good. :)

Re: Wood & Gas heat

Thanks for the feedback. After using kerosene for years I didn't really think the unvented gas could be worse. I will check with the insurance company about their restrictions on wood stoves. The fireplace we're venting it through is not located on an outside wall, is double sided (one side in the k...
