Re: Opinion time - Stain or Paint?
There's lots of paint colors besides white. High gloss alkyd enamel is very hard wearing and scrubbable. In Canada this type of paint now is only being sold as "DTM" (Direct To Metal) paint. It works fine on wood and is no different from alkyd enamel - except for being slightly less good d...

Re: Opinion time - Stain or Paint?
I agree with Wackyshack. I think a dark stained area that doesn't run the perimeter will be distracting to the overall white tile walls/floors. The wainscotting could be white or another light color that picks up on the color in the fancy tiles. This might mean that you need to paint the mirror fram...

This site is from the UK and has many photos of refinished old floors. This business uses shellac as an integral part of the process - whether as the first coat sealer on bare wood, before wood is stained or doing a shellac and wax finish: m This place is in the US and has a sympathetic approach to ...

Re: Anyone install their own gas fireplace?
This place had the nicest looking and most period appropriate looking fireplaces, when last I looked. I have never seen one in the flesh though. The exchange plus shipping and duty to Canada was cost prohibitive:

Re: Etiquette question with trying to salvage pre dumpster.
I have only been yelled once while in a dumpster. There were a ton of pressure treated decking boards - which were exactly what I needed. The owner (or tenant) yelled at me out the window, claiming their contractor was going to re-use them. If so - why were they carelessly tossed in a dumpster v.s. ...

Having that carpet gone makes an instant improvement. A long, long time my ex and I pulled up the carpet from a small cottage type place we were renting. It made such an instant difference to how the place smelled ! I wonder if saturating the hairy spots with denatured alcohol would loosen them from...

Back away. Flipper's only interest is in inflating their profit - not making a better, thoroughly repaired house. I don't know what flippers do in your neck of the woods, but I have seen many lazy atrocities with regards to quick cosmetic cover-ups in my neighbor's homes, some former flips from up t...

Re: Identify my floors!
Your floors look much better than what we started with. The very dark stain is a little puzzling but from what I can see your boards don't look gouged, split or broken. The patched in parts tell the history of your house - rooms reconfigured or added on to. I don't see this as a deficit, unless you ...
