Re: I don't think they are even capable of building proper houses anymore
Well you pegged me with this statement then! : And the said part is that the majority arent even able to see all those problems I certainly would be happy to own that home. But I do see your point. Standards sure have changed. Definitely didn't want to offend anyone, so I apologize if I did! I mean...

Re: I don't think they are even capable of building proper houses anymore
I actually like most of the detailing. The only two things that jump out at me are those downspouts and the stone choice. Otherwise.. I think it's a pretty good attempt. 4 million though!? Yikes. I think it's a pretty well put together house. The craftsmanship is probably close to the victorian bui...

Speaking of Disney, take a look at a Disney inspired Olde Town, Celebration, Florida, just down the road from the World Of The Mouse. Driving through it at first glance, you have this step back in time feeling...but! Its Disney! Example: m I gotta say, it looks pretty convincing on the outside. Lik...

I don't think they are even capable of building proper houses anymore
One thing I sometimes dream about is to build an 'old house' from scratch - a perfect second empire, but new and with proper European construction techniques(sorry US, but stick buildings suck) I never intend to ever actually do it, just something fun to dream of. However, its fun to look at modern ...

Re: A vent post- ugh, boiler woes.
So my "high efficiency" Dunkirk gas boiler has crapped out- it works when the system is reset, but as soon as it kicks off (when it reaches the desired home temp) it won't turn on again. The repair guy has come 4 times already, replaced all the internal computerized parts (apparently ther...

Re: Thinking forward of the notion of a liveable old home
I think about this quite often and my approach is to preserve anything original and if it's too far gone, then replace with modern materials of same or better quality. I guess that falls under rehabilitation guideline. I personally don't love old houses because they are 'old'. I love them because of...

Re: Sash weights
When I was working on the facade bay last year, I was able to take out a whole bunch of weights from the pockets since I replaced some of the siding and the it was easily accessible. There were like two extra weights per sash - they just kept adding them once the ropes broke. Needless to say, they a...

Phil: I'm under the impression that in the US you have to use cement board but everywhere else greenboard seems to be the norm under tile. Preferably with an additional waterproofing layer like RedGard. Even in the US greenboard with a waterproofing layer is gaining momentum. Schluter Kerdi is anot...

Bonnie, it might be the images, but the brownish shade I think you're referring to, do you think it's similar to the color of the veneer plaster vvzz posted about a page before in this thread? Veneer plaster will most likely be bright white when dried as it's typically lime based. Generally 'veneer...

Re: What I did at my house today...
When I scraped off the top two layers of paint (blue and green), underneath was the brown coat that you can still see. I'm not sure exactly what it is. It's very, very thin, and underneath it is bare plaster. I didn't try to scrape it off, but every time I look at it, I find that some of it is flak...
