Re: 1910 Small Town Restoration

Wow...the woodwork in your home is beautiful...and those leaded windows! Very very nice!!!

The attic goodies are a fun find. I haven't found anything in 9 years but a rusty old buckle & a hammer head with 1/2 the fork broken off out in the back yard under a tree where I'd been digging..

Re: Old House Remodeling

To add one more thing, while these books can certainly come in handy, your best resource is on these pages. The members of this website. The knowledge here is priceless.

Re: Old House Remodeling

I don't have a ton of books, but I do have the OHJ Compendium, Working Windows by Terry Meany, and Bungalow Kitchens by Jane Powell. They have all come in handy, especially the first 2, as I have yet to begin work on my kitchen. Don't fret that you've been there 3-ish years & not done much. It's...

Re: Opinions on handrail/picket restoration

Happy to assist!!!

That gray looks great with the white & that leaded glass window! If the wood has to be painted, at least it's a great paint job! (you should see the mess on my brick from a crappy outdoor paint job to my porch & trim!)

Re: New/old storm windows?

While it's not what I want permanently, a few years back I bought some cheap storms from Lowes for the 2 upstairs bedrooms. The East side had NO storms & the West had a crappy set that were truly falling apart. Had the upper & lower sashes taped together with Gaffers tape! The Lowes were $50...

Re: What's the time period of this home

Good for you lovesickest! I had a painting company (guy in a painting truck) stop while I was outside scraping my porch railings. He told me, in his total voice of expertise, that I shouldn't bother scraping, since the railings weren't to code & I have to remove them anyway. Oh...yeah....I'll ge...

Re: What's the time period of this home

Thanks for the compliment! Learned how to do it from many of the people here & Jades advice has been invaluable! I agree 100% with lovesickest! Hire out the stuff like roof, electric & plumbing (unless you know how to do these things). Old house related things, like floors, trim, windows &am...

Re: Paint on Brick

Question on the lye...is it Red Hot Devil Lye?? lye.jpg If this stuff is fine...what is the mix ratio? Do you use a regular paintbrush to apply? Mix it in a can? I have tried a gazillion things to get the paint splatter off the brick around my porch trim & the windows. I swear, the PO paid someo...
