Re: Log cabins & their staircases
Hi Tucker Tav. I can only speak from my own experience, but the current log house we are dismantling had a ghost of an original staircase along a side wall. It was very steep, and was in the rear left quarter. We don't know what the room divisions, if any, were there when that earlier staircase was ...

Re: The mad painter strikes again!
Props to them. Wow - that interior was trashed. Would much rather see trim and doors painted than the house demo-ed to make way for something like a duplex. They even recreated the trim where it was missing. While it is a shame to see the wood covered up, I'd have to agree with Sara. It may not be ...

dereliction by neglect, should be a crime......jade Here in Ottawa Ont Canada we have the National Capital Commission. (NCC) They have jurisdiction over the 'Greenbelt" area around the city. Farms and houses were expropriated years ago to create this buffer zone. The many beautiful barns and h...

Re: A New/Old Addition for the Stone House
Mal, that is a striking red. How are you lifting those logs, hire a boom truck, Jin pole or plain ordinary brute strength and lots of friends? Just pure, neanderthal strength, lol...as long as we can do it. ( last time we did this was 15 years ago and I'm feeling my age this time around) It's hubby...

Re: Seriously? Who does %&#@ like this? UPDATE!
My early 1800 house in NS has the same type of hearth. An angled timber crib underneath, holding rubble and lime mortar. Not very attractive, but fire-safe. It's a central chimney with 2 hearths; one cooking and another smaller, and another false one where there used to be a parlour stove.

Re: A New/Old Addition for the Stone House
Mal, keep an eye out for old home talismans, you just might find a coin under the threshold or shoes stuffed in the mantle ect. Would be interesting to see what else you find. Was that penny deep under the window sill, maybe some talking from the past and giving you date those windows were installe...

Re: My New Fence...
Cool fence!! I like the colour. My daughter in law and I scrounged 12 old doors for their wedding backdrop. They're still in my barn...may have to do something like this. I don't go for the really 'eclectic' look, so I appreciate the fact that all your doors match, and they are all the same colour. ...
