Re: Mystery marks in doorway
Looks like the standard spot for a locking bar to enter the floor for the half of a set of french doors that was the 'fixed' side. I would imagine the slot in the header is in the same spot in relation to the opening as most often there were locking bars at the top and bottom. The circles do not loo...

Nice! I love the fact that she went with the toughest install by going on the diagonal but couldn't go get one more tile....and then could not figure out an outside corner. Well, I guess that is one reason many of us are in business...we fix what homeowners and their friends create And @Willa: it lo...

Re: Mystery Gunk on Stairs
I had something similar on my stairs when I tore up the carpet, but I believe it was from a prior floor covering and the PO's just left it and covered it. My guess was glue to adhere or prevent slippage on individual stair treads that were applied. I found that heat and a good scraping got most of i...

Re: Best Gift EVER!!
I've always thought it would be neat to have one....lots of folks used their yards as dumps here in Maine. We have found lots of pottery pieces in the back, and several neat old bottles, all in one spot. Wonder what a metal detector would find... We also have a piece of property we bought that had o...

Nice!
New tools are always a welcome gift, even if to oneself
Only issue now is cutting a hole in the wall and installing an outfeed table outside....

Re: Matching new to old work...level questions...
I don't find that threshold to be inordinately tall. I have thresholds that are taller than that in the bedrooms because I ripped out the multiple colors of wall to wall carpeting that the POs had installed and kept the pine six panel doors (which were cut to clear carpeting and padding). It was imp...

Re: Matching new to old work...level questions...
Are you removing the threshold to install a finished floor or is what we see in the picture the finished floor? If it were me, and for this discussion I will assume that is the finished floor since we have that pic to use for reference, I would simply remake the threshold to fit the slope of the flo...

Cardboard boxes with plastic underneath for moisture. Unless you are tracking in GOBS of snow and slush, the cardboard helps dry your shoes so you don't slip on other flooring as well. If it does get too wet, throw it out and tape down some more.
