Re: Medium term floor decision

I would think anything oil or wax based is going to impregnate the wood and severely limit your down-the-road options due to adhesion of the later finish, even if you cleaned and sanded. If you are willing to give the floor a good sanding later, prior to final finishing, maybe a light coat of poly, ...

That is a very handy and easy to remember way to place a ladder. I have used it to teach many a newbie on ladder placement.

Re: What makes a good ladder ?

I have a 24' and 28' both bought off c-list. If I recall, I paid $50 each. The 24 is a Type 1AA I think, weighs about 700 lbs and is very old, needed a new pulley and rope and has fixed feet. The 28 is a Type 3, very light and also needed a pulley and rope. As long as you check the operation of the ...

I can see why you fell in love with this house. It is going to be quite lovely when you are done, actually it's quite lovely now! Looks like more cosmetic projects than anything else, good score!

Re: Better control of hot water heating system

I have older Rite Temp programmable thermostats and they have a variable offset but only down to one degree which works for me because when set at 67 the heat comes on at 66 and off at 68 which works for us. We have hot water baseboard and there is some continued heating after shutoff but fine with ...

Re: What makes a good ladder ?

Agree, if I recall correctly the weight rating of #2 is 225 lbs and a 24 is plenty for just about any homeowner and still lightweight enough for one. Actually my lightweight go-to ladder around here is my 20'...I think it weighs as much as a feather pillow. One thing I would recommend is a standoff,...

Re: Hullo from the "there be dragons here" area of MA

Yay! Congrats on the closing, now it is time to rest your mind a bit and relax. Next comes the excitement and that whole ball of energy as you move in. And I echo Nicholas....are there even pictures? Is this a real house or have you been leading us on in a huge story and you're actually a mystery wr...

Re: Hullo from the "there be dragons here" area of MA

OMG, you have the patience of a saint. I would have switched banks and had the mortgage guy taken out and shot by now. Good luck...and when it is all done, just sit back and relax, take it all in and let the pressure slide way. Stuff will get moved, everything will get cleaned, etc, etc. Just enjoy ...

Re: Vintage Plumbing Question(s)

If you take the clamp off, you will be able to see what the mating surface looks like. That looks like some sort of flared tailpiece which you may be able to find either salvage or new, but if the mating surface has a flat spot, you may even be able to make a modern tailpiece work. What size is the ...

Re: Bathroom project

I always use and recommend cement board anywhere in or near a shower or tub surround when tiling. Grout, even when sealed is porous by nature and will wick some water through to the substrate. You don't want that to be sheetrock.
