I like the Adam or Federal style homes. Colonial revivals are nice and simple Queen Anns with wrap around porches are also fun. The FLW Prairie style houses are also favorites.

I rented a bungalow on Rye Beach, NH which had the same construction in the bathroom. I think it made the rooms a little bigger by building this way. I was surprised to see this but the little house probably had been a summer place originally.

Welcome, You have a very interesting home with many interesting features. You have definitely selected a very serious problem to address first rather than working on cosmetics. A structural engineer might be best to advise how best to correct the hacked beam now & worry about the wall above later.

Yes the screen/storm combos were as described above but ours had a knob with an inside lock so the knob couldn't be turned from the outside; it was a thumb slide built into the latch mechanism.
