Re: Gothichome, the restoration of.
Hi Ron, Things here are busy. Still doing radios and other furniture. The shop is jammed full with things to do along with pieces waiting with the customer. Just haven't been visiting sites much and doing much posting. Once in a while I put something up on my Facebook page. Just finished building 12...

Re: Gothichome, the restoration of.
Wow! Great detail work. I know what it takes, but mine is on a smaller scale. Are you going to paint go natural?

Re: Thoughts on this mantel
I'm just going by the profiles I see in the picture. "Modern" meaning mass produced by machines vs. hand planes. Moldings have been somewhat standardized over the years with manufacturing codes assigned to them. Homes of late 1800s cold have mass produced moldings. I agree with Willa that ...

Re: Thoughts on this mantel
Moldings of the era were usually made with hand planes. Each craftsman had his own set of planes (usually very many, each having a different profile) and were most likely made by him, although he also might have bought them from someone else or they may have been handed down. But, standard molding s...

Re: Thoughts on this mantel
Gee hard to tell from the pictures but I think it may be much "newer". The moldings look like stock moldings to me. Especially the one under the shelf. Just my opinion from a picture.

Re: More fixer upper furniture!
Looks like the corner blocks are glued and screwed. I'd take the screws out and see what falls apart. If the corner blocks are glued on to the aprons they can probably be knocked off. Especially if it is old hide glue. Then the mortise and tenons will need to be re-glued. If hide glue, just adding m...

Re: LED Bulb Question
Could be that a build up of a small amount of heat is detrimental to the electronics. If that is the case, it's poor design. I'd put it into the category of paranoia of their lawyers. Remember watts is watts whether it is being generated by a burning filament or LED electronics. The LED is also elec...

Re: LED Bulb Question
The real problem is that a long, long time ago someone started measuring the brightness of a light bulb by how much power it used (watts). Watts is not a measure of brightness, lumens is, or foot candles. Watts (power) is dissipated as heat energy. So, a 40 watt incandescent bulb is cooler than a 60...
