Re: What I did at my house today...

140 year old shutters! I'm so jealous! And it's great news that they've held up all this time. Yes, I got the traditional model with two panels for each window with a control bar down the center of each panel. Since my windows are in pairs, I got folding panels. It looks like your windows are also i...

Re: What I did at my house today...

Yesterday evening my custom wood plantation shutters for my upstairs rooms were delivered, so today I went to put them up. Unfortunately they didn't tell me that I'd need a countersink set in order to drill my own installation holes, so that's going to have to wait. I plan to just put in two screws ...

Re: A Slightly Premature Hello

That would ave made me discredit anything the realtor said past that point. They make money off the sale so they are in a conflict of interest. I always think of them as the ones that provide the keys. what really steams me is when they try to block communications between the existing owner and the...

Re: update on turpentine

Do you have to treat the danish oil the same as boiled linseed -- ie, making sure it doesn't spontaneously combust? I'm still terrified of this and I'd like to avoid even using the stuff if it's possible to still do a good job without it.

Re: A Slightly Premature Hello

There is unfortunately some controversy in my family over the possibility that what's underneath is in bad condition ... but the only way this house will ever have curb appeal is if it comes off. This has always been my fear as well, about anything to do with renovating or restoring anything! The t...

Re: Some thing interesting

That's amazing! But it had to originally have had a mechanism so that it could be used often, right? The video also shows them removing nails in a piece of flooring and I can't imagine they did that every time either.

Re: A Slightly Premature Hello

It is so cute! Wow, they really did take all the character out of it when they modernized it, didn't they? But that's also the value of a clean start -- you can get as fancy or as simple as you want as you go along.

Re: 1939 "Minimal Traditional" Cottage

Gina, I seem to have missed your post. The home looks great, sits well on the lot, nice pleasing colour, it looks like it was built yesterday. Well envisioned and well executed, your neighbours will be envious. Thanks, Gothichome! My two next door neighbors I'm in contact with a lot, and they told ...

Re: 1939 "Minimal Traditional" Cottage

The only reason the yellow went away is because it wasn't paint. It was some sort of spray-on elastic polymer that was put on sometimes in the 90s. You know, "never paint again!" Except that it dried and cracked, and pulled away from the brick, making pockets for water to pool behind. I r...

Re: 1939 "Minimal Traditional" Cottage

Bonnie, you did a beautiful job with your house's presentation, but I do prefer the yellow -- I'm probably biased. My Jeep and my house are yellow, after all!

That green is a really nice shade though, it probably makes you feel cooler just by looking at it!
