Re: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, Ron & friends! Hope all of you are enjoying the holidays and have great plans for 2023! Not much is going on in the mountains of Western Maine...January thaw is happening, thankfully after having received 24" of snow 2 weeks ago, followed by 3" of rain! That was a t...

Re: Spalling Brick
There's decent logic behind not sealing. My viewpoint is just that as water continues to infiltrate the brick, it'll find voids and freeze in them, perhaps leading to more of this. That's what the masons in my area would recommend, anyway...I was one for 12 years, lol. I don't have the long-term inf...

Re: Spalling Brick
Hi Cake, Yup, that's not uncommon! Probably due to freeze/thaw cycles over the years. Sometimes and entire structure will do it! Hopefully it's just localized in your case, related to how the brick fired in the kiln way back when (voids). The repair for 'blown out brick' isn't hard. You carefully sc...

Re: Insulation under floorboards/in crawlspace
Yes, I'd seen Jade's page, and 'presence' on other social media...I think that's how biz is done now, on facebook, lol. I still just do a web site. If need be, I can email... What I'm most worried about is turnover - how rapidly you can get sash back to the customer, and how long the job must go on....

Re: Insulation under floorboards/in crawlspace
3-season warm, since it's not insulated! That would be the major challenge to move forward - having to lay out some $$ for insulating, even if DIY. Things are SO expensive now! One sheet of 2"x4x8' foam board insulation is over $50 here! I have a little 'room' in there lined w/plastic now, which let...

Re: Insulation under floorboards/in crawlspace
Pretty good, Gothic - and you? Finishing up the outdoors season for painting. Got a small start on the historical society building I'd mentioned...also re-glazing all of their windows as time goes on. I have about 10 done and back in (20 sashes). Thinking of expanding the glazing operation a bit mor...

Re: Insulation under floorboards/in crawlspace
Bit of a late reply here, but yes - good resource! It's not rocket science, but sometimes 'the rules' to moisture control can be confusing and easily shifted around, mentally. Once we understand how moisture works, that's probably 85% of the battle!

Re: Insulation under floorboards/in crawlspace
I can see the logic in 'come and go', Ron. I guess my approach would be that if you have it dry, and poly the floor (or concrete...), then it stays gone, LOL. I think some info from 'building science' might be of more use here, rather than anything directly related to old construction. It's the meth...

Re: Insulation under floorboards/in crawlspace
Is it a dirt or concrete floor in the crawl? If dirt, you'll want to lay down at least 6mil poly as a 'floor', taping any seams with 3M Flashing tape. You can 'weigh down' the edges with 2x4s or bricks, if there is no way to seal them with the tape. You Don't want to VENT the crawl to the outside......

Re: Wood positive for lead? Advice please!
Well Ron, it's one where a few different "painters" have had at it over the years. Last one appears to have not primed anything and just went over it all with some sort of satin paint, and caulked the window glazing!! (that is killing me while doing windows, with the fumes and so on. In the end, mos...
