a lot of times they also used stretched muslin and wallpapered over that. The way to tell is there would be a bunch of tack holes around the edges. There was an article in the Old House Journal about how to do that years ago.

You see that type of thing a lot around where I live. I think, like others, it is a way of finishing off the knee wall but not affect the symmetry of the placement of the columns. A lot of time there is an urn or something on the platform, or a hanging basket above it.

My house was built in 1914, and all of the interior doors are massive slab doors. they must weigh 100 lbs! They are Douglas fir core with thick oak veneer on all four of the exposed sides. new appliances don't last long enough to worry about. They seem to have about a 10 year life span at the far end, so by the time they are SUPER dated, they will all be broken

What style and how tall are you looking for? I have a pair of legs I got to use in my main floor bath, but I ended up getting a pedestal sink instead. The pair I have date from the 30-40's and the chrome is in pretty good shape, if I recall.

My house is a craftsman, and the radiators are very plain, just a slight curve to each side with a raised rib in the middle of each "column". It also has little feet, but no other ornamentation.
