Sideways
I had already encountered a slimmer stone that was mostly "squared" in place with lots of mortar. I thought this was another. Nope. It was laid in sideways instead of flat. Even after I got the surrounding mortar off, it did not want to budge. I noticed how much the lilies had grown against it and were contributing to that, but finding out it was in sideways after a bit of digging was the real light bulb.
