Even though there wasn't glue behind the rick rack, I knew the tension on the thicker threads was uneven and tried to be careful because I wasn't sure how much sun damage the original threads might have and I didn't want to accidentally break one from a too hard tug.
I decided to use a thin flat head screwdriver to first pry and then pull the thicker threads out of the weave in between straws after one tug started warning of repeated pull wear possibly cutting into my finger fold.
